Want more presence this holiday season?
If you're anything like me, you've grown tired of how hectic and commercialized the Christmas season has become. I used to get so wrapped up in preparations (shopping, cooking, cleaning) that I often would feel stressed-out, cranky and overwhelmed.
It definitely didn't feel like the most wonderful time of the year!
Then I realized that I was only doing this to myself, and if I wanted things to be different I was the only one who could change anything.
Christmas tends to be a time of year when stress can get the better of us, and self-care is usually the first thing to go when things get busy.
We should try to slow down a bit and stop expecting so much of ourselves. Sometimes we worry too much about what other people will think and make decisions because we don't want to hurt their feelings.
While it can be scary to break with tradition, you might be surprised. Others may feel relieved that you had the courage to speak up because they've been thinking the same thing, or it's one less gift they need to buy, or party to go to.
Now, there are some things that have to be done and for those things all we can do is change how we think about them.
Changing your thoughts has a huge impact on how you feel and if there's something that you absolutely must do, then you may as well enjoy it!
We also need to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves. We need to do our best to get enough sleep, eat well, exercise and stay hydrated.
Plus, we want to make sure that we make time for family, friends and fun - you know the things that really matter most.
Staying present is also helpful by finding some quiet time to relax and think about what we’re grateful for.
I've come up with my own version of "The 12 Days of Christmas". My version is a guide that you can use to take great care of yourself to reduce your stress and help you be more present this holiday season!
