How To Make A Resolution You'll Keep: One Simple Strategy

It’s a New Year and you know what that means. Lots of people have made resolutions that this will be the year they “get healthy”. But, only 8-12% of people who make a New Year’s Resolution stick with it for longer than a few weeks.

Every year for about 15 years, I said this will be the year I “get healthy”. I was fat, sick and depressed for most of my life and I spent thousands of dollars on diet and weight-loss programs thinking that losing weight would solve all my problems.

The biggest problem with one-sized fits all weight loss programs is that they don’t address why you were overweight to begin with.

Sometimes they worked, but most of the time they didn’t – and even when they did, I couldn’t stick with the program long-term. 

I also made myself really sick in the process and a few years ago, was shocked when I finally reached my “goal weight” and realized that not only was I not happy, I was the most miserable I had ever been.

Obviously, that’s not the result I had intended to get. I thought that I had been unhappy my whole life because of my weight and it was a big wake-up call when I realized that my unhappiness had nothing to do with the number on the scale.

I learned the hard way that the ends do not justify the means, and now I want to help other women avoid the mistakes I made.


For many people, resolutions become a pain point – something they’ve tried and failed at.

Most people try to overhaul everything at once, and start intense workout routines and crash diets as soon as January first rolls around.

It’s not surprising then that we give up after a few weeks thinking it’s too hard, or start making excuses. We come up with reasons why things don’t turn out the way we want them to.

In truth, we give up before we ever really get started.

Most times our resolutions are too general and focused on changing a bad habit without a clear direction about how to do it.

So what’s the one simple strategy to keep your resolution this year?

Ask yourself how you want to feel and what you need to do to feel that way. Write down as many things as you can think of.

Don’t try to do everything at once - pick one or two things to work on to start.

Then you can decide on the specific actions that you can take to start a new routine, which will eventually turn into a new habit.


You need to know where you’re starting from and take small steps. For instance, if one of the items on your list is to “eat healthier” you really need to be clear about what that means to you. 

It could mean making time to plan your meals for busy nights instead of buying take out, or taking your lunch to work instead of picking up fast food.

Or you could decide to make healthier choices when you do eat out. The point is that you get to decide what “eat healthier” means to you and it totally depends on your current situation.

If another item on your list is to “exercise more” pick an activity you like. You don’t have to join a gym or buy a treadmill for your living room, which for most people turns into an expensive coat rack!
